Thinking About a New Heater? Here Are the Top Questions We Get
At South Placer Heating and Air, we’ve been helping local homeowners stay cozy for decades. And after so long in the biz, we’ve heard just about every question there is when it comes to installing a new heating system.
In this blog, we’ll answer some of the ones we get most frequently so that you know what to expect for repairs and installations of heating systems in Sacramento and the surrounding area.
Let’s get into it.
Is Replacing My Heating System Essential?
Everyone hopes to get the most they can out of their home and appliances. Seeing if your heating system really needs replaced or if you can still squeeze a few years out of your old system is a totally fair question.
Honestly, the answer depends on your current setup. Here are some signs you may want to consider a replacement:
Age
If your system is 15 years or older, an upgrade will do more than prevent breakdowns. A modern system with better efficiency can save you money on your utility bills.
Constant Repairs
If your heating system is breaking down on a regular basis, paying for constant repairs will end up costing you way more than a replacement.
No Heat
Is your heating system running but not heating your home? Maybe it starts out pretty good but within 30 minutes it’s pumping luke-warm air or not pushing air out strong enough to heat your home? Better to replace it.
What Heating System Should I Get?
Another common question with a similar answer. What type of heating system you choose will depend on your needs, so let’s break down a few of the options we see the most.
Around Sacramento, we typically install:
- Furnaces (gas or electric) – Classic and reliable systems with a good reputation for consistency.
- Heat pumps – Super energy-efficient and perfect for our milder winters. Though they can be more expensive to install, the cost savings over time are immense.
- Ductless mini-splits – Great for homes without ductwork or for specific zoned comfort.
If you’re not sure what’s best for your place, don’t worry! Call us for an inspection and we’ll help you figure it out.
Will Installation Take Up Time and Space? Is it Messy?
We get this one a lot. The good news? Heating system installation is pretty painless.
Most installs take about a day or two and require limited intrusion into your home. Plus, our experts take specific measures to ensure your home is protected from any potential damage or mess.
How Much is This Going to Cost Me?
Another common and essential question to know what you’re getting into.
Keep in mind that these are ballpark numbers and your specific install may differ in cost.
We will always provide a clear price quote before starting any work so that you can make a choice you feel confident in.
So, keeping all of that in mind, here’s the gist:
- Furnaces: $3,500–$6,500
- Heat pumps: $4,500–$8,500
- Mini-splits: $2,500–$5,000 per zone/unit

What do AFUE and HSPF Mean?
These acronyms stand for essential specs of your heating systems. Here’s the quick version:
AFUE
This stands for “Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency”. This is basically how fuel efficient your furnace is throughout the year.
Higher % = better fuel usage.
HSPF
This stands for “Heating Seasonal Performance Factor”. Similar to AFUE, this measures how efficient your heat pump is as heating your home over a complete season.
Again, higher number = more savings.
